In ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit,’ the vegetables in Mr McGregor’s garden tempts Peter Rabbit so much that he ignores his mother’s warnings and sneaks into the garden to feast on the delicious food. Eventually Mr McGregor spots the little rabbit, in his blue coat, eating some of his radishes. Peter manages to escape but not before losing his coat and shoes. Beatrix Potter’s delightful first story would set up the world for the following 23 little tales, which have remained as popular with readers as they did when they were first released a little over a century ago. Since 2016, the Royal Mint has been celebrating this unique achievement by announcing a series of coins featuring her characters; Peter Rabbit is the only one to be shown each year in a different design.
For 2018, Peter Rabbit’s 50p coin has captured the bunny in his moment of happiness as he eats some of the stolen radishes. Inspired by Beatrix’s illustrations, Emma Noble’s design captures the fine details of the original watercolour illustrations, highlighted through the Proof standard finish and colour printing. Like every gift set, the coin is protected in a clear acrylic case, making this a memento that can be passed on. Also included is a book with Peter’s story, bound in a cover exclusively designed for this edition.
