Beatrix Potter has been charming the world’s children ever since her first story about Peter Rabbit was published in 1902. As part of the popular Great British Coin Hunt, the Royal Mint announced the first Beatrix Potter 50p collection in 2016 to celebrate the beloved author’s 150th birthday. Based on its success, a new 50p coin collection was released for 2017 featuring more characters.
The final coin in 2017’s four-coin collection is the Benjamin Bunny 50p coin, issued to commemorate Peter’s famous cousin, Benjamin Bunny. Introduced in “The Tale of Benjamin Bunny,” the story follows Peter and Benjamin returning to Mr. McGregor’s garden to rescue the clothes Peter lost in his first story.
The design, by Emma Noble, features Benjamin in his oversized Tam o’ Shanter hat, holding his jacket, and one of Mr. McGregor’s radishes. The fine texture of the coin’s design also mimics the quality of Potter’s original watercolour illustration of the bunny. The obverse design is of the fifth definitive portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin comes in a fold-out case, with more information about Benjamin’s adventures and the life of Beatrix Potter.
