For more than a century, Beatrix Potter’s wonderful characters have been enchanting children and adults all over the world. In 2016, to celebrate the 150thbirthday of the beloved author, the Royal Mint produced a set of four 50p coins featuring these adorable creatures using Potter’s original illustrations. This set and the subsequent 2017 collection have become popular items in the Great British Coin Hunt.
For 2018, Mrs. Tittlemouse, the terribly tidy wood mouse, joins the spotlight as the final coin in the year’s collection. The character comes from Potter’s treasured children’s story, ‘The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse.” The simple story follows Mrs. Tittlemouse around her home as she continuously struggles to keep her house orderly as all sorts of visitors stop by.
The coin is designed by Emma Noble and presented in full colour in order to capture Beatrix Potter’s original hand-painted illustration style. Mrs. Tittlemouse dons her blue and white striped dress and carries a basket containing her dinner. The obverse side features the fifth definitive portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark. The coin comes in a clear presentation case and a booklet describing Mrs. Tittlemouse’s story and information about Beatrix Potter.
