Introducing the Mrs Tiggy Winkle 50p Coin
Beatrix Potter’s delightful children’s stories and illustrations have been a part of bedtime routines for over a century. To celebrate her creativity and genius on her 150th birthday, the Royal Mint announced a special 50p coin collection in 2016 featuring four characters from her children’s tales. Since then, coin collectors have been eager to get their hands on each year’s new series of coins as part of the Great British Coin Hunt. Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is the fourth character to be released in this special five-coin series. From the story “The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle,” she is the charming hedgehog laundress for the animals in Beatrix Potter’s world.
Mrs Tiggy Winkle 50p 2016
The Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle 50p coin is struck to a Brilliant Uncirculated finish, the best coin for your collection compared to the coin you would find in your change. Designed by Emma Noble, the Mrs Tiggy Winkle coin features the attentive hedgehog in her washerwoman’s dress and hat. In an interview with the Royal Mint, Emma Noble pick this coin as the most difficult to design out of the 2016 series because Mrs Tiggy-Winkle “… doesn’t have as much shape so I had to spend longer working on this design.”
The coin also comes in dedicated fold-out packaging, featuring Beatrix’s original colour illustrations as well as quotes and facts about Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle’s story.

How Much Is the Mrs Tiggy-Winkle 50p Worth?
Due to the coin’s generally high mintage of 8.8 million, this coin isn’t that hard to find so the value isn’t as high as other Beatrix Potter coins like Jemima Puddle-Duck or Squirrel Nutkin. On eBay, as of the end of March 2019, a single BU coin was sold at £13.50.
Other Mrs Tiggy-Winkle Coins
The Brilliant Uncirculated isn’t the only version you can find of the Mrs Tiggy-Winkle 50p. Beyond the circulation coins, the Royal Mint also released the Silver Proof version with colour-printing. These coins typically go for a higher value and are presented in a clear acrylic case with a commemorative box and certificate.
Other Beatrix Potter Coins
If you or someone you love is a fan of Beatrix Potter, this isn’t the only coin to honour one of her characters. As of 2019, the Royal Mint has released 3 multi-coin collections in 2016, 2017, and 2018 and a special single Peter Rabbit non-circulating commemorative coin.
