Introducing the 1999 Rugby 2 Pound Coin
The 1999 Rugby World Cup was primarily hosted in Cardiff, Wales, and the sport’s first professional competition after its declaration in 1995. Even though Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium was the main venue for the games, games were also played in Scotland, England, France, the Republic of Ireland, and Northern Ireland. Twenty nations competed for the Webb Ellis Cup, named after the credited inventor of rugby, William Webb Ellis. Starting from 1 October 1999 the teams competed until the final on 6 November where Australia won over France, 35-12.

The coin’s straightforward reverse design is by Ron Dutton and features a rugby ball centred with goalposts framing it from above and below. Surrounding the ball and goalposts is a textured stadium with a scalloped edge. The obverse design is of HM Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
Like all 2 pound coins, the Rugby 2 pound coin has an edge inscription. It commemorates the event saying, ‘Rugby World Cup 1999.’
